I am Rahul Joshi. I recently went to ABC with a group of friends from Kathmandu, Nepal. And yes with the indefatigable and ever smiling Dendi Sherpa. Dendi is an Alpine style climber and an accomplished mountaineer with the Everest summit under his belt. He probably was over qualified to guide us. Even in our group though I was the novice and the laggard which meant Dendi had to inevitably match my pace while the rest 3 raced ahead. Neither did that deter Dendi nor diminish his enthusiasm. He would walk ahead and with a rosary in his hand and a smile on his face, wait calmly for me to catch up. At one point, the sole of my one of my shoes came off. Enterprising that he is, he found a rope somewhere and tied the sole with rest of the shoe. Ahem, a few dozen steps and the contraption came apart. Without losing a sweat he bent down and pulled a gauge bandage from his first aid kit and fixed the injured sole (and my scared soul). I even became a mini celebrity (or a comic distraction) amongst the fellow trekkers with a few taking a snap of the bandaged shoe ( and editing out rest of me). But the bandage did the magic and I continued the descend without a scratch to me! I was amazed to learn that he’s part of the Sherpa teams who fix the ropes in the mountains for rest of the climbers to climb up with carabiners and then claim the fame. Despite such heavy duty credentials he was as equanimous and enthusiastic while slow walking with me as he would be with the expert mountaineers. Dendi was a guide in the mountain and will remain buddy for life. Wish him a great success and happy climbs. Onwards and Upwards.
